Shalom Everyone,
Life is busier than ever and Covid numbers are keeping us at home and I am feeling really hopeful. While it is slightly far off for us here in Canada, celebrating Yom HaAtzmaut this past week and seeing the pictures from Israel of the streets full of people reminded me that there is light at the end of this tunnel and we are on our way there.
I am certainly tired and impatient for it to be done, but I am looking forward to better times to come.
UNIT 3 of the BNAI MITZVAH PROGRAM BEGINS THIS SUNDAY, APRIL 18, at 11am! The final unit is called OUR JEWISH COMMUNITY. Our first Session, on Sunday, is entitled EMPATHY: THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE UP OUR JEWISH COMMUNITY.
SEE THE FLYERS BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION. YOU CAN STILL REGISTER!!!
THIS SUNDAY April 18, at 4pm BEBY Families will focus on protecting the Earth during an EARTH DAY PAINTING EXPERINCE. TORAH TALK FOR THE TABLE with Rabbi David
Parshat Tazria/Metzora - Words and Birds
The Torah reading this wewek describes the sickness and healing process for someone who gets "tzara'at". We aren't completely sure what the infection was, but we do learn that it was caused when one spoke "lashon harah", destructive speech.
Our words are powerful and they can be used to heal or to hurt. It is so important that we are thoughtful about the words we say because our words are like birds: once you let one go, it flies away. That means that it is hard to take back something that you said, especially if it hurts someone else's feelings.
In fact, according to the Torah, after someone recovers from Tzara'at, they bring two doves to the Cohen. One of those birds is offered as forgiveness and the otherone is let go - to fly away, to remind us that there are always consequences for our words and our actions and it is our job and responsibility to make sure that we use healing words, and to help each other fly and succeed.
Questions for Discussion:
1. "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me" is an expression. Do you agree? Why? 2. Think about a time when someone said something mean to you. How did that feel? 3. Have you every hurt someone else's feelings? What did you do afterwards?
UNIT ONE, Connecting to Israel and how that impacts Jewish Identity was amazing. You can watch the recorded programs here . UNIT TWO, The Mitzvah in Bnai Mitzvah is now complete. It was an amazing learning experience for everyone who attended. Videos will be uploaded shortly.
STARTING THIS WEEK - SUNDAY, APRIL 18th!!! UNIT 3 - OUR JEWISH COMMUNITY!!!! Session 1 - April 18 - EMPATHY: The people who make up our Jewish community Session 2 - April 25 - GETTING INVOLVED: How YOU can take a leading role Session 3 - May 2 - SPIRITUAL HEALTH: Keeping Our Community Together Session 4 - May 9 - SYNAGOGUE AT THE CENTRE: The importance of Synagogue life and involvement to developing your PERSONAL JEWISH IDENTITY!
