Parshat Acharei Mot - Proud to be Jewish
This week's parasha includes a section where HaShem tells us about the gift of the land of Israel. The Torah almost describes the land as alive: we are told to follow HaShem's guidance to live a holy and balanced lifestyle so that "the land will not vomit you out for your volatile behaviour, as it vomitted out the nations that were there before you" (Vayikra 18:28).
The land of Israel cares about how we behave in the land. Being a Jew in the world is no different. When we choose to hide or be ashamed of our Jewish identity, our connection to Judaism will "vomit us out". We will feel disconnected from ourselves and our nation, and will feel lost. However, by being proud of being Jewish, and standing up for all of the values that Judaism teaches, not only will we be embraced by Judaism, but we will feel comfortable with who we are, and will feel at home wherever we are in the world because of our strong Jewish identity.
This week we observed Yom HaShoah, remembering a time where 6 million of our Jewish brothers and sisters gave their lives because they valued the importance of their Jewish identity, no matter what the cost. This coming week we will observe Yom Hazikaron and celebrate Yom HaAtzmaut, two days that remind us how important it is to fight for and celebrate the amazing Jewish history we have, and the amazing future we are working to build as a nation.
Am Yisrael Chai! The Nation of Israel Lives! Discussion Questions: 1. Why do you think Israel "vomits out" people who don't follow HaShem's will?
2. Why do you think the Torah describes a land as alive?
3. Do you think the Earth is alive? Why?
4. What are two ways you can show that you are proud of your Judaism?
