Parshat Yitro
This week's Torah reading describes the giving of the Torah at Sinai. Our Rabbis try to reflect on what the experience was like for us. The Torah describes thunder and lightning and clouds and fire on the mountai. There was also the sound of a shofar that got louder and louder, but in all of that, we can still wonder: what was it about the experience that forever changed us, beyond the "sound and light show".
Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon (Rambam) explained that everyone there only heard loud noises, but people who were open to receiving HaShem's mitzvot, understood the whole Torah in their minds and hearts.
Rabbi Mordechai Leiner says that all of Israel experienced prophecy, and that, all at once, the whole nation started speaking the words of the Ten Commandments from our own mouths.
Either way the experience at Sinai was one that changed our collective consciousness and united us a nation, who was taken out of Egyptian slavery, by HaShem, and then were given a guide for living a Godly life, the Torah.
Torah is not something that is far away, but "it is in our mouths and our hearts to live it".
Discussion Questions:
1. Can you describe a life changing experience that you have had?
2. Do you think a big sound and light show is more powerful than a feeling in your heart or is a feeling more powerful than a "show"? Why?
3. Why do you think that Judaism tells us to learn Torah every day and every night?
Questions and Answers from Last Week:
1. When you get really excited what do you do?
I smile really big and squeel. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!! I might even jump up and scream "YES" or something like that.
2. Why do you think Moshe and Israel sang, and not something else?
Singing, even a song that I make up on the spot, is a really good way to express our feelings about our lives. Whether happy or sad, a song can really capture our emotions.
3. What is your favorite song and why?
One of my favorite songs is "Soul Shine" by the Allman brothers because "you've gotta' let your soul shine; it's better than sunshine; it's better than moon shine; it's...sure better than rain, and you've gotta' let your soul shine, shine to the break of day".
