As the temperature outside drops we have to make sure that we are warmer as individuals. Chanukah finished this past week and even though we aren't lighting the flames on the chanukiah, we can still carry that fire inside our hearts, and shine it out to the world through our actions.
With our inner fires burning, I'm excited to announce an upcoming program that will begin in 2022: SUNDAY FUNDAY! Join us Sunday mornings for BEBY skating at Chapley arena (next door to the shul). Everyone is welcome. Details below.
There is still more to come before the end of 2021, and a lot more coming in 2022, including the Shabbat morning youth programming. SCROLL DOWN FOR MORE PROGRAMMING AND REGISTRATION INFORMATION!
Parshat Vayigash - Be Direct
The king of Egypt (Yosef, but the brothers don't know that yet) has imprisoned Binyamin, and Yehuda promised his father (Yaakov) that he would keep Binyamin safe. What could he do to save Binyamin?
Yehuda, pushes past all of the guards and the subjects of Yosef, and goes right upto Yosef, and straight into his eyes "Please, from the bottom of my heart, you are my master, and please, hear me out. Don't be mad that I pushed through, because you have all the power and could destroy me...but Binyamin is his father's deepest love, and if you take Binyamin it will kill his father. Take me instead, but Binyamin needs to go home."
Yehuda has no other option but to risk everything. And it works. His words to Yosef were so heartfelt and so true and showed that Yehuda had grown and improved from the person who sold Yosef into slavery, that now Yehuda was willing to sell himself into slavery to save Binyamin.
By being direct, saying what he wanted and saying what he needed, Yehuda not only saved Binyamin, but got Yosef to admit to who he was, and to a wonderful family reunion.
Discussion Questions:
1. Why did Yehuda say so many nice things to Yosef?
2. How did Yehuda show his growth?
3. Do you think Yehuda wanted to save Binyamin because he was his brother, or because he was his father's most loved son? Does that make a difference in the way he acted?
