The Beth Emeth Youth to Young Family Email
Shalom Everyone,
Yay for Shabbat! It's been an incredibly productive, but long week. My family is still up at camp, and I have been all-in, head first with shul this week. Beyond the constantly growing and deepening personal relationships that I get to build, we had our first meeting of a NEXTgen Young Families Group, with an eye toward growing our community and programming family and youth activities with our Beth Emeth community.
We are all craving the connection that community has to offer. After 18 months of being distanced, the close community experience is harder to come-by, and shul is a great place to reconnect.
The High Holidays are at the forefront of our "shul" mind right now, and if nothing else, this pandemic has been a great opportunity to adjust to the needs of our community members. We are reopening our shul, reimaging our programing, and renewing our commitment to Beth Emeth families to ensure we all have a meaningful High Holiday experience. Each day will offer something slightly different, making sure that we are each engaged, regardless of our age, Jewish background, or experience.
There is a lot of work that needs to be done, but we are getting there. If you are interested in actively shaping the future of Beth Emeth, for yourself, your family, and your friends and community, let me know. As I said, there is a lot of work to be done, and the more you get involved, the more the future will involve what you envision for our collective vision for the future of our Beth Emeth community.
We are open on Shabbat mornings again. I look forward to seeing you all back in shul soon! SCROLL DOWN FOR MORE PROGRAMMING INFORMATION!
TORAH TALK FOR THE SHABBAT TABLE with Rabbi David
EKEV - Eating and Enjoying Life
Birkat HaMazon (the blessing after meals) is something that many of us are familiar with, whether from shul, camp, or school. There is a familiar tune, and on Shabbat and Holidays, we also sing Shir Hama’alot (a song of ascent) to further elevate to our meal-time experience.
This week’s Parshah – Ekev, is the source for Birkat HaMazon. The Torah tells us “ואכלת ושבעת וברכת - v’achalta, v’savata, oo’verach’ta - and you will eat, and you will be satisfied (satiated), and you will bless”.
Those three words are not only about food, but also about our lives: our experiences are the “food” that we eat. All of our experiences, whether they leave a good or bad “taste” in our “mouths”, are teaching us how to improve. As we each work to always grow, we should also try to be happy with who we are right now. We should be satisfied with our present, because this moment is necessary for the next one. And finally, we should recognize and acknowledge that everything we have is a blessing.
There is so much in life that we can take for granted, especially the food in our fridges and on our tables.
Discussion Questions: 1. Why is it important to say thank you after eating? 2. What are two things that you have, but take for granted? 3. Why does everyone seem to love pizza? 4. How does question 3 relate to this week's Torah reading?
Shabbat Shalom!
