Shalom Everyone,
Today is LAG BA'OMER. The Omer period that we are in - the time between Pesach and Shavuot, is a time where we focus inward, trying to improve ourselves so that we can each improve the world around us. One of the symbols associated with Lag Ba'Omer is bonfires: just as the fire lights up and warms the space around it, we should also spread our own light and bring warmth to others. One of the best ways to do that is through gratitude.
In our house, every night before bed we say "Thank you, HaShem..." and each list a few things that happened that day or that we are anticipating. The truth is, in every moment, there is so much for us to be grateful for. In our hardest moments, finding something - even something totally unrelated - for which to say "Thank You" can truly uplift our perspective.
For more, check out the Torah for the Table this week.
One of the "Thanks You"s that is most common is for MOMMY! While we celebrate our mothers everyday, MOTHER'S DAY is MAY 9!!!All week BEBY NEXTgen has been selling flowers for Mother's Day, and to raise money to increase programming in the months ahead. TORAH TALK FOR THE TABLE with Rabbi David
Parshat EMOR - Making Every Moment Count
The parshah this Shabbat talks about all the Jewish holidays during the year. The Torah introduces that section with the words "Eleh Mo'aday HaShem - these are the times that Hashem has declared are special". While the Torah lists the specific Jewish holiday observances, it is clear that the times themselves are special, regardless of our observances.
We are now in the period of counting the Omer, which is spoken about as one of the "special times" in Parshat Emor. Even if you are not counting the Omer every day, this is still a special time where every day, and every moment, counts.
Questions for Discussion:
1. What is something you can do RIGHT NOW to show that this moment is special and counts? 2. Describe a time in your life that is special to you. 3. How has a past experience affected who you are today?
UNIT ONE, Connecting to Israel and how that impacts Jewish Identity was amazing. You can watch the recorded programs here . UNIT TWO, The Mitzvah in Bnai Mitzvah is now complete. It was an amazing learning experience for everyone who attended. Videos will be uploaded shortly.
STARTING THIS WEEK - SUNDAY, APRIL 18th!!! UNIT 3 - OUR JEWISH COMMUNITY!!!! Session 1 - April 18 - EMPATHY: The people who make up our Jewish community Session 2 - April 25 - GETTING INVOLVED: How YOU can take a leading role Session 3 - May 2 - SPIRITUAL HEALTH: Keeping Our Community Together Session 4 - May 9 - SYNAGOGUE AT THE CENTER: The importance of Synagogue life and involvement to developing your PERSONAL JEWISH IDENTITY!
You can still register your kids for the rest of this year's Bnai Mitzvah Experience.
If you have a child who recently had, or is about to have their Bar or Bat Mitzvah, this program is for you. It will be fun, experiential, educational, engaging, thought provoking and will give your Bnai Mitzvah kids a real sense of connection to our local and broader Jewish community. Sign up here!
