TORAH TALK FOR THE TABLE with Rabbi David
Parshat Behar/Bechukotai
In Parshat Bechukotai HaShem tells us that if we follow the mitzvot then good things will happen, but if we break the rules then bad things will happen. A lot of people think that HaShem punishes us for not listening, but that is not what the Torah is teaching.
Our Rabbis explain that we misbehave when we think our actions don't really matter. When our behaviour doesn't follow the rules, the natural result is that something bad will happen. It's like poking a baloon with a pin: the balloon will pop, but not as a punishment - that's just what happens when you poke a baloon with something sharp.
HaShem wants us to care about each other and the way we behave, so the Torah tells us that doing good will lead to more good.
Discussion Questions
What is something good that you do? How did it lead to something else good?
Have you hurt someone's feelings recently? Did you apologize? How does aplogizing help?
Is there something you do that you think doesn't really matter? How might it actually matter to you or to someone else?
TEENS: we are looking to create a Senior's Line. Some of the elderly in our community need some more human engagement. Let me know if you'd be interested in speaking to an older member of our community, or even just reading to them over ZOOM.
We want to grow the program and need YOUR HELP! Email Rabbi David for more info.
