BECOME A SPONSOR
In our new norm with online Clergy led private services, Divrei Torah, Torah Readings, Cantorial Music, Rabbi Lectures and Classes, you too can also sponsor one of these weekly online live sessions in honour of your Simchas or in memory of your loved ones for a donation of $54.00.
Your generous sponsorship will be included in the weekly e-blast, as well as mentioned by the clergy at the beginning and end of the online live session you are sponsoring. While we are temporarily closed due to this health crisis, it is imperative we continue to keep our synagogue operating at this time thereby ensuring we are able to once again open our doors to you - our dedicated members, and to the Jewish community when it is viable to do so.
The Executive, Board and Clergy thank you for your continued support during this difficult time. Best wishes for a healthy and safe Shabbat.
This Shabbat, we reach the midpoint of the entire Torah with the double potion of Acharei Mot - Kedoshim. These two portion titles with the title, Emor, of the following week, actually translate as "After the death, one speaks of their sanctity."
In contemporary Jewish life, these words take on new meaning after the commemorations of Yom Hashoah and Yom Ha'Zikaron. All who died in the Shoah and for the State of Israel died as martyrs , sanctifying God's name, called "Kiddush Ha'Shem" in Hebrew.
Parshat Kedoshim provides an insight into all the Torah's fundamental values. Our Sages teach us that the majority of the Torah's essential principles are found in this single Parsha.
While a few select verses apply specifically to the land of Israel, the Haftarah for this Shabbat, taken from the Prophet Amos, sounds like it could have been written in recent times:
"I will restore my people Israel. They shall rebuild ruined cities and inhabit them. They shall plant vineyards and drink their wine. They shall till gardens and eat their fruits. And I will plant them upon their soil, never more to be uprooted from the soil I have given them, said the Lord your God."
What a beautiful and meaningful prayer and aspiration composed thousands of years ago and which rings true to this very day. Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Howard Morrison

An occasional missive from our Executive Director, Candace Vogel
This coming Monday will mark six months since I assumed the role of Executive Director here at BEBY. My first thought is: Pearl Grundland has excellent timing ;)!
On a serious note I am keenly aware that we are living through an extraordinary time – both personally and in the life of our shul.
Synagogue has always been the galvanizing center of Jewish communities. Now, we find ourselves pivoting to offer online services and produce content only accessible through technology. It’s not the same.
We are all learning that connection isn’t always about being together. Despite my brief tenure thus far, I miss the people. I miss regulars saying hello through my open door on their way to services; I miss people popping in to introduce themselves, welcome me, tell me they knew my parents or share some of their history here at BEBY.
I miss the office staff. Most of the staff are furloughed currently so Sari and I are doing our best to look after the administrative tasks and Natalya is juggling the finances. I miss the sound of davening from the Chapel in the morning. I miss the frequent chats I would have with our clergy. Now we meet regularly by Zoom - but it’s not the same.
I both struggle with change and at the same time innately understand that it is the only constant in life. While we are trying to normalize the reality of Covid, quarantining and their consequences, it’s just not normal.
I miss you - and I can’t wait to see you again. Shabbat Shalom.
