In this e-blast — FROM RABBI MORRISON SHABBAT TIMES & SERVICES THIS WEEK COMING SOON NEXT-GEN/YOUTH TO YOUNG FAMILIES ONGOING PRPGRAMS APEX KOSHER CATERING ALEPH BEIT CHADASH SCHOOL MINYAN VOUCHERS
This Shabbat, we read the Ten Commandments. Two versions appear in the Torah, in Exodus and in Deuteronomy. Subtle differences appear between the two. The most obvious pertains to Shabbat. In Exodus, we read, Zachor - Remember Shabbat. The reason given is the creation of the world. In Deuteronomy, we read, Shamor - Safeguard Shabbat. The reason given is liberation from slavery.
Every Shabbat evening we recite, "Shamor V'Zachor - Safeguard and Remember were uttered as one." While people cannot authentically say two ideas at the same time, God's time transcends humanity.
Remember and Safeguard, two ideas at the same time - cognitive and action, do and don't do on Shabbat, relating to God and to humanity, being part of a distinct people and a larger world.
I encourage everyone to find a deeper appreciation of Shabbat.
I invite us all to come together for Shabbat Across North America, Friday evening, February 28th.
Shabbat Shalom!
Rabbi Howard Morrison
