MINYAN VOUCHERS
This Shabbat afternoon, I invite you to attend our annual Tu Bishvat Seder during the third Sabbath meal. The actual date of Tu Bishvat is this Monday.
The fifteenth of Shvat commemorates the new year of trees in Israel. The early signs of Spring begin to emerge. Various customs have evolved from eating all kinds of Israeli fruits to raising Tzedakah for the Jewish National Fund, which oversees the planting of trees in Israel.
As a child, I used to go from person to person raising funds for JNF. During all the Israel trips I have led as an adult, we have made it a point to plant new trees in Israel and to recite the planter's prayer.
The Tu Bishvat Seder was developed by the 16th century mystics of Tzfat. Their original Haggadah was called Pri Etz Hadar - fruit of goodly trees, a Biblical quotation associated with the Etrog of Sukkot.
Most modified Seders, such as ours, include four cups of the vine starting with the white color of Winter and gradually ending with the Spring color of red. Fruits with an outer shell, inedible pit, and no protection at all are eaten to display different mystical teachings.
I hope that each of us will find a meaningful way to celebrate Tu Bishvat. I look foward to seeing you this Shabbat Shira.
Shabbat Shalom!
Rabbi Howard Morrison
