Michael Shawn Kerzner, Age 48 – Businessman & Real Estate Consultant, husband of Rochelle and father to Seth, Aaron and Shaina. Has served on the Board of Beth Emeth for the past five years. Current Chair of the Kadima Program. Michael brings strong management skills and innovative ideas to the Synagogue, having served on a number of committees including Fundraising. My immediate family have been congregants since my marriage to my wife Anne 36 years ago in Beth Emeth and my parents have been congregants for over 45 years. We are proud parents of our three married daughters. I am an owner of a successful manufacturer, importer and distributor of a family owned and operated men's and ladies clothing firm. I have been a Board member for over 10 years and chaired a number of Committees, Fundraising, Calendar, and the Cantor Danto Committees. My goal is a financially strong synagogue that is not totally funded by membership contributions. I have focused my efforts and will continue to focus on fundraising for the synagogue.

Bernie is an Associate Partner at Ernst & Young LLP and has been practicing as a Chartered Accountant for many years. Bernie’s clients over the years have included many not-for-profit organizations including Jewish Family and Child Services, National Council of Jewish Women and Congregation Habonim. From his years of experience in dealing with these organizations Bernie has learned the importance of balancing programming and services with fiscal responsibility.
Having served as the shul’s Treasurer and as a Board Member since 2009, Bernie implemented many fiscal restraint policies including a “Smart Spending” initiative - essentially a call to arms to control costs and stop unnecessary spending. During his tenure as Treasurer, Bernie has chaired the Budget and Finance Committee and Audit Committee, has been an active member of many other committees and has been instrumental in negotiating significant contracts on behalf of the synagogue..
Bernie and Riva have been members of Beth Emeth Bais Yehuda Synagogue since having been married there in 1983. All family life-cycle events have been at Beth Emeth including each of their three sons’ (Rob, David and Matthew) Bar Mitzvahs. In addition to his volunteer work at Beth Emeth, Bernie has served on both the Applications and Membership committees of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario as well as having participated in many volunteer tax clinics where he prepared income tax returns for low-income families in order for them to receive social assistance.

Married to Bonita for 24 years and have 2 daughters, Simone (17) and Ashley (15). We have been members of Beth Emeth since 2005. Over the past few years I have become more and more active in the Shul community. I attend daily and Shabbat services on a regular basis, often leading the davening and have also led services in the main sanctuary and at the Thornhill Friday night services. I also lead services at Shiva houses when needed. I am currently a member of the Budget and Finance Committee, the Adjustments Committee and the Ritual Committee.
As a Chartered Accountant with over 30 years of public accounting experience I believe that I can make a significant contribution in leading Beth Emeth through the challenges it faces, both now and in the future, especially from a financial and continuity perspective. I am committed to seeing Beth Emeth flourish and grow and to this end my energy, drive and effort can make a difference.
